I’m sure we all know the feeling when something in the room is missing. Especially when you’re living in Dubai and have one of these ugly cold tiles all around the apartment. Very often you don’t own it and might move on to a new place in two years. But you still need it to be cozy while you are there. At the end of the evening you want to feel relaxed and comfortable.
To me the most disturbing feeling was the cold tiles that we had in our apartment before our renovation. Waking up in the morning I hated to step on the cold tiles, so the first thing I purchased was a fake fur rug. A soft material makes a luxurious landing pad and my morning felt much more comfy. A wall-to-wall carpet might work the best for a bedroom as it’s the place we’re most likely to be barefoot. But this option turns out to be more pricey than just adding a shaggy rug on each side of the bed.
There are many things which you can achieve by adding a rug to your room: they define spaces within a larger space; they anchor furniture so that a room “reads” correctly to the eye. A rug can define a conversation space in your living area, while choosing the correct size and color rug, your living area will appear more spacious. A bright colored rug will help you to accent a small area.
Living Room: Ideally, the entire sofa set should be completely within an area rug and leave at least 20-30 cm between the rug and the walls. Standard rugs measure 6’x8’, 8’x10’ and 9’x12’. Anything smaller lands up looking like a tiny island in the middle of your living room with a coffee table as its only inhabitant. If that’s doesn’t work out then try to place the front legs of your sofa and club chairs on the rug. In case your living room feels too spacious and your furniture is floating around ,then throwing a smaller rug over a larger one helps define and ground the space.
Layering: If you have a favorite rug which is simply too small to put in the center of a conversation area – layering is the solution. Try to find a carpet that relates to the one of the colors in your area rug and use that carpet as an anchor. Place the decorative rug strategically in the middle of the area rug, creating a wide border with the under rug, allowing the smaller rug to be admired as part of a rug ensemble. My advice for achieving a harmonious feel is to choose a natural color rug as a base, and placing on top a decorative rug. A splash of color will highlight your coffee table set. You can highlight any area in your home by accenting the space with a colorful rug and direct the viewers eye to that specific area.
Color and Pattern: There are many tips and “rules” from famous interior designers how to choose the right rug – in the end its your space and rules are made to be broken, so don’t be afraid to play with color and pattern! A bright and colorful carpet can bring so much life into your room. Make a statement with a patterned rug and introduce a healthy dose of visual interest into a space.
A rug that brings in all the colors of the room can pull a space together: a patterned rug is often used to offset a scheme full of solid wood furniture. But don’t feel compelled to introduce a pattern – sometimes a textured solid rug can add all the interest you need. If you have already a lot of color and pattern than you might stick with a single-color rug. A neutral shade can easily compliment your existing home décor.
I personally love to change around my home décor and bring new life into the house. When introducing a new rug I always choose some pillows, candles and other knickknacks in the color palette of the rug – that way you will always have the right visual effect. Creating contrast and adding different texture of layered rugs can lift your room to the next level!
In Cozy Home we have trendy Multi-Colored rugs that can be layered on a neutral jute rug. We also got some fabulous patterns with fluffy threads on them. The Indigo Blue Rug is one of my favourite as it goes very well with white or solid wood furniture. I just love the fluffy texture on it. A room with a mix of different textures feels rich and cozy.
